This project, above anything, was a research project. We were tasked to choose any scientific subject and create a comprehensive information graphic around the topic.
After lots of googling and searching around National Geographic, I remembered learning about a tiny organism many years ago that seemed to have the power of invincibility - tardigrades.
The first step to unconvering the tardigrade’s secrets was to research them and compile the findings into a document that catagorized the information. This step was crucial to developing the final graphic. One of the main challenges that I encountered while designing was trying to convey this very complex topic in an accessible way. I had initially collected too much data, and it was difficult to find a way to include all of it as text in the design.
Much of the original copy was translated to graphics, icons, or simply cut from the design to cultivate a better learning experience for the user. The final product is a very consolidated explanation of the tardigrade’s evolutionary processes but it communicates all of the crucial information in a digestible format for the audience.
All graphic elements seen in the final poster were hand drawn with a 12mm Micron pen. The original drawings were then scanned into my computer and edited in photoshop to create vectorized elements. The result is a unified and comprehensive set of detailed illustrations, icons, and graphs.
The information is divided evenly between four sections in the graphic. Each section seamlessly flows information from the previous into the next and creates a comprehensive learning experience for the audience.
Chunks of text are broken up with icons and graphs that give the audience the choice to quickly skim the graphic for the most important information instead of reading every paragraph. The text is meant to act as secondary information, while the icons and graphs to communicate the most important points
