The goal of the Design Research Methods course is to research, analyze, define and create a solution to a problem space. We learned how to synthesize intended user desires & competencies to create a dynamic and integrated design experience that solves the problem at hand, and provides engaging and understandable content to the user.
In Fall of 2024, University of Cincinnati admitted 53,235 students — a record breaking number. With this record breaking number comes conversations around how UC can support the hobbies and interests of students from diverse experiences and identities.

While University of Cincinnati does have an active program called the Bearcat Recovery Program that offers services, we hope to an opportunity for University of Cincinnati students to engage in social activities off campus without the feeling of shame, confusion, or frustration on where these spaces can be found.
As we enter 2025 and see the rise of Generation Z enter college, the workforce, and adult settings there has been a rise in the conversation around being ‘sober-curious’

After defining our problem space, we began to conduct generative and evaluative research to further hone in our focus. We gathered data from our target audiences using a variety of research methods such as card sorting, 1-on-1 interviews, surveying, affinity diagraming, and user testing.

Throughout our research, we found that sobriety and sober curiosity is a growing culture among young adults. Despite that - there are few, if any, places for these individuals to gather without influence or pressure to consume alcohol.
During our research and project development, we learned why research is so integral to the design process. We made several pivots in the efforts to make an effective and meaningful proposal for an inclusive event that includes all and in particular, those that prefer alternatives to the alcohol-centered culture that is prevalent on and around college campuses today.
Our final solution is a partnership campaign that provides young adults the opportunity to engage in socialization through dedicated sober hours with college town bars.
The final deliverables were a 30x40in comprehensive poster, 4 physical print assets, and a final presentation deck.
